Deep-Link Portfolios: How to Add Proof-of-Work Links That Recruiters Actually Click

March 5, 20268 min read

The Click-Through Problem

Generic portfolio links (e.g., "Portfolio: janesmith.com") receive a click-through rate of under 4%. But specific, contextual deep links hit 18-27% click-through rates. The difference is the specificity of where the link points and the context in which it appears.

Deep Linking vs. Homepage Linking

A homepage link asks the recruiter to do work. A deep link does the work for them. Compare:

  • Homepage link: github.com/janesmith — 47 repositories, no clear starting point
  • Deep link: github.com/janesmith/realtime-analytics-engine/blob/main/README.md — lands directly on a well-documented project

The Placement Strategy

Tier 1: Inline with Bullet Points (Highest CTR)

Embed a link directly within an experience bullet point, immediately after the claim it substantiates.

Tier 2: Project Section with Descriptive Links

Each project entry should include a deep link. Don't use "View Project" — describe what the link shows.

Tier 3: Contact/Header Section (Lowest CTR)

Links divorced from context. Still worth including as a fallback.

Anchor Text That Gets Clicks

Formula: [specificity] + [social proof or scale metric]

  • Bad: "Link" / "Click here" / "Portfolio"
  • Better: "GitHub" / "Live demo" / "Case study"
  • Best: "GitHub repo (2.1K stars)" / "Live dashboard (50K MAU)" / "Case study: 40% conversion lift"

Platform-Specific Strategies

GitHub

Link to specific READMEs, pull requests, or gists — not your profile page. Ensure READMEs have descriptions, screenshots, and architecture diagrams.

Case Studies

Host on Notion (public pages), your personal site, or Medium. Structure: Problem → Approach → Results → Visuals.

Tracking What Gets Clicked

Use Bitly or Short.io with analytics. Create unique short links per company application. Click data tells you which proof-of-work links resonate most.
